NFTs star in NBC show Saturday Night Live

The craze for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) is not stopping at television. On the famous sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live on NBC, they have now been mentioned in a sketch featuring US Treasury Secretary „Janet Yellen“.

Last night’s show was hosted by former actress Maya Rudolph. In it, Yellen, portrayed by comedian Kate McKinnon, gives an Bitcoin Trader an economics lecture at Crypto a university. A student then asks her to explain in a rap what exactly non-fungible tokens are.

„What the hell is an NFT? Obviously a cryptocurrency. Everyone is making so much money. Can you please explain what an NFT is?“

The sketch names a number of real and made-up NFTs in the crypto space

Among them, for example, images of Chuck E. Cheese, the US Supreme Court Justice, and of Family Guy character Peter Griffin dunking a basketball. The main characters in it are Peter Davidson as Student, who plays the rapper Eminem dressed as Batman henchman Robin. They are joined by Chris Redd as Morpheus from the Matrix films and a caretaker played by musical guest Jack Harlow. In the process, these tokens are succinctly explained.

„Non-fungible means it’s unique,“ he raps. „There can only be one like you and me. NFTs are insane, built on a blockchain. It’s a digital ledger for transactions and records information about what’s happening. Once it’s minted, you can sell it as art.“

In it, he highlighted the sudden rise in the number of unusual artworks, animations, and other images on digital marketplaces. The rap skit could raise dust in the crypto space, like Elon Musk’s announced musical NFT this month. The billionaire and Tesla CEO posted a video clip in which a song was played. In it, two diamond hands were shown under the moon with Shiba Inu dogs. Musk later said it didn’t feel quite right to sell the song as NFT.

In the final seconds of the Saturday Night Live sketch, the three characters plus „Yellen“ are cut from a still image and inserted into the Abbey Road intersection that also featured on the Beatles album. This was then turned into an NFT in the sketch, which was sold for 420 Ether (ETH), which was worth about US$718,000 at the time.
